Balos Lagoon & Gramvousa cruise

Operated by Blue Vans Crete

Balos Lagoon and the islet of Gramvousa form one of the most photographed seascapes in all of Greece, and the easiest and most enjoyable way to reach them is by boat. After a transfer to the port of Kissamos in the north-west of Crete, you board a cruise vessel for the relaxed sail along the wild Gramvousa peninsula, watching the cliffs and sea caves slide past. The first stop is the imposing Venetian fortress that crowns the rocky island of Imeri Gramvousa. Built in the late sixteenth century to guard against the Ottomans, it later became a notorious refuge for pirates. A short climb to the ramparts rewards you with sweeping views over the deep blue sea and the wreck of a cargo ship rusting in the bay below. From there the boat anchors off Balos itself, where a vast lagoon of white sand and impossibly clear water in every shade of blue and green stretches between the headland and a small island. There is generous free time to swim, wade through the warm shallows and walk up to the viewpoint for the classic panoramic photograph. The full day combines history, dramatic scenery and some of the finest swimming in the Mediterranean. Bring sun protection, water and a camera; the rest of the day is simply about enjoying one of Crete's natural wonders at a gentle pace.
