Voulisma Beach, widely known as Golden Beach, sits on the northeastern coast of Crete near the village of Istron, roughly 12 kilometres southeast of Agios Nikolaos and about 22 kilometres north of Ierapetra. It forms part of the wider Mirabello Bay, tucked into a small protected cove just below the coastal road that links Agios Nikolaos with Ierapetra. The surrounding area is a quiet, lush valley full of olive groves and springs, with the nearby villages of Istron and Kalo Chorio adding some local context to a beach stop. The beach itself stretches around 700 metres, making it the largest in the Kalo Chorio area, and it is defined by soft white-to-golden sand and strikingly clear turquoise water. The shallows are calm and the visibility is excellent, so swimmers can easily see the seabed and the fish around them. That clarity makes Voulisma a popular spot for snorkelling, and the gentle entry into the water suits families as well as casual bathers. Getting there is straightforward: drivers follow the main Agios Nikolaos to Ierapetra coastal road and turn off at the signs for Istron village. The beach is easy to reach directly from the road, with a designated parking area nearby, so it works well as a day trip or a stop along the eastern coast. Despite its relatively compact setting, Voulisma is well organised by any standard. Visitors will find sunbeds and umbrellas for hire, cafes and tavernas close to the sand, and water-sports facilities offering activities such as windsurfing, kitesurfing, paddleboarding and jet skiing. This blend of natural beauty and easy amenities is exactly why it draws crowds. Voulisma is popular throughout the year and can get genuinely busy during the peak summer months, so arriving early is the standard advice if you want to secure a good spot on the sand. It suits travellers who want a scenic, photogenic beach with full facilities rather than a remote, undeveloped escape.
