Makrigialos lies on the southeastern coast of Crete, about 24 kilometres east of Ierapetra and roughly 60 kilometres southeast of Agios Nikolaos, set in the centre of Kala Nera Bay. Over time it has grown into the largest tourist destination in this part of southeast Crete, while still keeping the easygoing feel of a coastal village rather than a high-rise resort strip. The defining feature of Makrigialos is its water. The sea here is very shallow and calm, and it stays remarkably warm, with high temperatures even into the winter months. Being shallow and relatively sheltered from the wind, the bay is considered one of the safest swimming areas in the region, particularly well suited to children and to swimmers of all levels of confidence. The main beach stretches roughly a kilometre in front of the Analipsi area and is a well-organised, fairly narrow strip of fine golden sand. It is backed by big tamarisk trees for natural shade and lined with numerous cafes and restaurants, and it has earned a Blue Flag thanks to its clean water and gently shelving, soft-sand seabed. Facilities are comprehensive. Visitors will find sunbeds and umbrellas, showers, water-sports options and most of the usual seaside services. The village behind the beach is fully equipped with large and small hotels, taverns, restaurants, bars and cafes, supermarkets, bakeries, ATMs, a doctor and pharmacies, so there is no need to drive elsewhere for daily needs. A long seafront promenade lined with guesthouses, taverns and bars serves traditional Cretan cuisine and fresh seafood. Makrigialos is an ideal base for families and for travellers who want warm, safe water combined with full amenities and an extended summer season. Its calm shallow bay, organised beach and well-developed village make it one of the most comfortable and convenient places to stay or spend a day on Crete's southeast coast.
