Damnoni Beach lies on the south coast of Crete about 3 km east of the village of Plakias, in the Rethymno region. It occupies a sheltered bay roughly 500 metres long and is one of the most popular and easily accessible beaches in the Plakias area, while still keeping a relaxed, natural character.
The beach is made up of soft sand mixed with patches of fine gravel, sloping into clear, clean water that is excellent for both swimming and snorkelling. Because the bay is fairly open it catches plenty of sunshine, and the calm, transparent sea has made Damnoni a favourite with families and active visitors alike. The setting is framed by low hills and rocky headlands rather than dense development, so it retains an unspoiled feel despite its facilities.
Getting to Damnoni is straightforward. A paved, well-signposted road runs from Plakias directly to the bay, making it just a few minutes' drive from the village and around 45 minutes from Rethymno town on good roads. In summer you can also arrive by boat, as several boats pass each day between Plakias, Damnoni and Preveli, giving a pleasant alternative way to reach the sand.
In terms of amenities, Damnoni is well organised without being overdeveloped. Sunbeds and umbrellas can be hired across much of the beach, typically for somewhere in the region of 10 to 15 euros depending on location, and there are showers and toilets on site. Water sports are available, adding to the appeal for those who want more than just sunbathing. A handful of beachfront tavernas and restaurants serve fresh seafood, Mediterranean and traditional Greek dishes, some with shaded terraces under trees for a relaxed lunch.
Damnoni suits a broad range of visitors. Families appreciate the gentle, clear water and the on-site facilities; couples and groups enjoy the easygoing atmosphere and good dining; and snorkellers can explore the clear shallows. It is busy in high season but rarely uncomfortably so, and its closeness to Plakias makes it an easy choice for a full day at the beach or a quick swim. A practical tip is to arrive earlier in the day in midsummer to secure a good spot and parking.
