Georgioupolis Beach lies on the north coast of Crete in the Chania region, in the resort town of Georgioupolis, which sits conveniently between the cities of Chania and Rethymno, roughly 43 km east of Chania and about 22 km west of Rethymno. The beach begins at the town's small harbour, at the mouth of the River Almyros, and extends for a remarkable distance along the coast. This is one of the largest sandy beaches in the Chania region, stretching for around 10 km of mostly soft sand. Just before the town the Almyros river forms a small lake and wetland that is home to many birds and other wildlife, and where the river meets the sea it keeps the water pleasantly shallow. The smaller western section near the harbour is more sheltered from the wind thanks to its position, and this part is well organised with all the amenities visitors typically need. A highlight of Georgioupolis is the little white chapel of Agios Nikolaos, dedicated to the patron saint of sailors, which stands on a small islet in the sea about 100 metres offshore from the harbour. From a distance it appears almost to float on the water, and it is one of the most photographed sights in the area, particularly at sunset. Reaching it is a small adventure, involving a walk along a rocky causeway. That causeway should be approached with care: the rocks are uneven and can be slippery, especially in the middle section where waves often wash across, so sturdy, non-slip footwear is strongly advised. The path is not suitable for strollers or wheelchairs and is best attempted by those with good mobility. There is no admission fee to visit the chapel, and while there is no dedicated parking at the islet, the town has several parking areas from which you can walk to the beach and causeway. Georgioupolis suits families and relaxed beachgoers particularly well. The long sandy shore offers ample space, and the shallow water near the river mouth is ideal for children, while the western harbour section provides organised facilities and easy access to the town's tavernas, cafes and shops. Visitors who enjoy walking can explore the long beach or the river and lake area, and almost everyone makes the short, careful pilgrimage out to the photogenic chapel in the sea.
