Xerokampos

Xerokampos lies in the far southeastern corner of Crete, around 69 kilometres southeast of Sitia, which makes it one of the most remote and least developed areas on the whole island. The drive from Sitia takes roughly an hour and twenty minutes, and because public transport options are very limited, a rental car is effectively essential for getting there and exploring the scattered beaches. What draws people to Xerokampos is precisely its untouched, end-of-the-road feel. The coastline is a string of remote, sandy shores backed by small sand dunes, with multiple little coves separated by rock formations and water of exceptional clarity. The main beaches include Mazida Ammos, also called Long Beach, along with Alatsolimni, Ampelos and Vourlia, each with its own character but all sharing the same shallow, turquoise water. The area is also notable for its natural features, including prehistoric palm fossils and excellent snorkelling spots. In winter, a low-lying area floods to form a small sea-lagoon, and this seasonal wetland has become an important eco-habitat, sheltering migrating birds such as flamingos as well as other wildlife. The combination of clear water, dunes and quiet coves gives Xerokampos an unspoilt, almost wild atmosphere. Facilities here are deliberately minimal. There are only a couple of small tavernas in the village and no organised rows of sunbeds, so the area is best suited to self-sufficient travellers who arrive with their own car, water and shade. This lack of development is part of the appeal rather than a drawback for those who seek it out. Xerokampos rewards visitors who want solitude, natural scenery and clear, shallow swimming water away from the crowds of Crete's bigger resorts. It is ideal for independent travellers and nature lovers, but anyone expecting full beach services or easy bus access should plan carefully and treat it as a remote excursion.
