palm forest river beach south coast scenic sand and pebble

Preveli Beach sits on the south coast of Crete in the Rethymno region, at the point where the Kourtaliotikos Gorge opens to the Libyan Sea and the Megalopotamos (Great River) flows down to meet the waves. It lies a short drive east of Plakias and below the historic Preveli Monastery, and it is one of the most photographed beaches on the island thanks to its dramatic combination of gorge, river and sea. What makes Preveli unmistakable is the palm forest. The Megalopotamos river forms a freshwater lagoon just behind the beach and snakes inland into the gorge, lined the whole way by a dense grove of Cretan date palms. Visitors can swim in the cool river water, wade upstream beneath the palms, or cool off in the salty sea, all within a few steps of each other. The beach itself is a mix of sand and pebbles backed by steep cliffs, giving it a wild, semi-tropical feel quite unlike the organised resorts of the north coast. Reaching Preveli takes some effort, which helps keep it from feeling overrun. The usual route is by car: drive from Plakias toward the Preveli Monastery, and about 1.5 km past the lower (Kato) monastery you reach a large car park. From there a footpath and a long flight of rocky steps descend to the beach, a walk of roughly 15 to 20 minutes. The descent is manageable but the climb back up is steep and tiring, so good shoes and water are essential. Alternatively, many visitors arrive by boat. Excursion boats run in summer from Plakias and Agia Galini, dropping passengers directly on the sand and sparing them the steep trail; this is the easiest option for anyone with limited mobility or young children. There is also a public bus from Rethymno that runs a few times a day and stops near the car park, leaving the same downhill hike. Facilities are deliberately limited because the area is protected. There is usually a small seasonal canteen and some sunbeds and umbrellas for hire near the river mouth, but you should not expect the full taverna-and-shop scene of a developed resort. Bring sunscreen, water and snacks. Preveli suits adventurous beachgoers, nature lovers and photographers rather than those after wall-to-wall amenities, and the reward for the walk down is one of Crete's truly iconic landscapes.
