Triopetra is a remote and scenic beach on the south coast of Crete, in the Rethymno region, lying roughly 50 to 52 km south of Rethymno town and about 13 km southeast of the village of Akoumia, at the foot of Mount Siderotas. From the resort of Agia Galini it is around 40 minutes' drive away, making it a popular escape for those wanting open space and dramatic scenery.
The beach takes its name, which means "three rocks", from the striking stone formations that rise straight out of the blue water just offshore. These rocks are the beach's signature feature and give Triopetra its wild, photogenic character, with panoramic views along the largely undeveloped coastline. The setting feels remote and elemental, a contrast to the busier organised beaches elsewhere on the island.
Triopetra is in fact made up of two beaches separated by a small peninsula. The first, known as Small Triopetra or Koumado, lies in an enclosed sandy and rocky bay south of the three rocks and is more sheltered from the wind. The main beach, West Triopetra (also called Chatzi), is formed west of the rocks and extends for some kilometres; it is vast and beautiful but, because of its exposed position, often windy with waves around midday.
Access is by car along paved roads that branch off from either Akoumia or Sachtouria, after which there is a short final walk of around five minutes to reach the sand. The journey down to this stretch of coast is part of the experience, passing through quiet countryside and mountain scenery, and the relative difficulty of getting there keeps crowds modest even in summer.
Facilities are limited and low-key in keeping with the beach's unspoiled nature. There are a few rooms to rent and some tavernas, and umbrellas are available, but you should not expect the full amenities of a resort beach. Triopetra suits travellers seeking tranquillity, natural beauty and space, as well as those interested in yoga and wellness retreats that the area has become known for. A practical tip is to choose the more sheltered eastern bay on windy days, and to bring water and supplies given the remote location.
