Glyka Nera, whose name means Sweet Water, is a secluded pebble beach on Crete's rugged south coast in the Sfakia region, roughly 75km south of Chania and 3 to 4km west of Hora Sfakion. It sits tucked between the seaside villages of Hora Sfakion and Loutro, in a spot where the White Mountains plunge almost vertically into the sea, with cliffs rising as much as 500 to 600 metres directly above the shore. The result is a wild, dramatic setting that feels genuinely remote.
The beach takes its name from its most remarkable feature: freshwater springs that bubble up directly through the pebbles at the waterline and from the seabed just offshore. Swimmers experience this as sudden swirls of startlingly cold water mixing into the otherwise warm sea, an unusual and memorable sensation. The springs are most active in spring and autumn when groundwater pressure is highest; in high summer the flow lessens but is still noticeable. The shore itself is clean pebbles, and the water is deep, crystal-clear, and a striking deep blue, though noticeably colder than most Cretan beaches because of those springs.
Getting there is part of the adventure, as the beach cannot be reached by car. The easiest option is a short boat trip from either Hora Sfakion or Loutro, with scheduled services running in season. The more adventurous walk in: a coastal path from Hora Sfakion takes around 30 to 45 minutes, while a longer, tougher trail from Loutro takes about an hour. Both follow the cliff-edge as part of the European E4 long-distance footpath and are regularly maintained, but they require reasonable fitness, sturdy shoes, a hat, sunscreen, and plenty of water, as there is little shade en route.
Facilities are minimal, in keeping with the beach's off-grid character. There is usually a simple seasonal canteen or taverna serving drinks and basic food, but you should arrive prepared and not rely on much being open. Camping is a long-standing tradition here, with people pitching tents under the tamarisk trees along the back of the beach, and the spot has a relaxed, alternative atmosphere that has long attracted free campers and naturists.
Glyka Nera suits independent travellers, hikers, and anyone willing to make an effort for a pristine, uncommercialised swim in spectacular surroundings. It is less ideal for families with very young children or those wanting organised comforts, given the access, the pebbles, and the cold spring water. The reward for the journey is one of the most beautiful and atmospheric beaches in all of Crete.
