Elafonisi is one of the most celebrated beaches in the Mediterranean, occupying the far southwestern corner of Crete. It is a wide, shallow lagoon of turquoise water separated from a small uninhabited island, Elafonisi itself, by a sandbar that visitors can wade across. The whole area covers about 1.5 square kilometres and is one of the most recognisable landscapes on the island.
The beach's signature feature is its pink sand, fine and pale and shot through with rosy tones created by the natural accumulation of crushed pink shells and coral fragments, in particular the remains of Foraminifera. The colour is most vivid in certain patches and after the surf has stirred up the shells, lending the shoreline its famous blush.
Just as remarkable is the lagoon itself. The shallow, calm channel connecting the mainland to Elafonisi island is so clear and gentle that the water often rarely rises above knee height, allowing visitors to walk across to explore both sides. This makes Elafonisi one of the safest swimming spots on Crete for young children, while the islet beyond offers quieter coves for those willing to wander.
Elafonisi is a protected Natura 2000 site of considerable environmental significance, home to rare plants, rich coastal flora and nesting loggerhead sea turtles (Caretta caretta). Among its protected species is the rare endemic plant Androcymbium rechingeri, and the wider area hosts well over a hundred plant species. Because of this status, visitors are asked not to disturb the dune vegetation and not to take sand home as a souvenir.
The beach suits families above all, thanks to the warm shallow water and soft sand, as well as photographers and nature lovers drawn by the pink shoreline and protected dunes. It is extremely popular and can become very crowded in high season, so arriving early or later in the day helps. Sunbeds, umbrellas and basic facilities are available in the organised sections, but respecting the conservation rules and bringing sun protection are both essential.
