Plage d'Almyros

Almyros Beach lies about 2.5 kilometres south of Agios Nikolaos and is the most popular beach in the town. It takes shape near the mouth of the Almyros River, which empties into the sea at the southern end of the beach, giving the whole spot its name and its distinctive character. The beach runs roughly 300 metres in length and combines easy accessibility with a genuinely natural setting. The sand is soft and the water is shallow and usually calm, which makes Almyros especially well suited to young children and less confident swimmers. One thing to be aware of is the water temperature: because the river flows all year round, the sea can feel noticeably cold in some places where the fresh water mixes in, a quirk that surprises many first-time visitors. Adjacent to the beach is the protected wetland of Almyros, a small but ecologically rich habitat. Towering eucalyptus trees, reeds and a few palm trees frame the area, and the wetland is home to several rare bird species, adding a touch of nature-watching to a town beach. For facilities, Almyros is very well organised. There are lifeguards, restrooms, showers, sunbeds and umbrellas for hire, and a beachside cafe. Reported prices have been modest, on the order of a couple of euros for a sunbed and an umbrella, and roadside parking nearby is plentiful and free, which keeps a visit simple and inexpensive. Beyond swimming and sunbathing, visitors can enjoy snorkelling, beach games, kayaking and paddleboarding. The combination of shallow calm water, full amenities and a location within easy walking or short driving distance of Agios Nikolaos makes Almyros a reliable choice for families and anyone wanting a comfortable, well-serviced beach close to town.
