Spili is a traditional mountain village in the heart of the Rethymno region, perched at around 430 metres on the slopes of Mount Vorizis, roughly 30 km south of Rethymno town on the road towards the south coast. As the administrative centre of the Agios Vasileios area, it is a lively but unspoilt place, with stone houses, plane trees, flower-filled balconies and narrow lanes that climb away from the main street. Its cool mountain air and abundant spring water make it a refreshing contrast to the coast and a popular pause for travellers heading south.
The village's defining landmark is the Kefalovrisi fountain, a long Venetian-era construction lined with a row of 25 carved stone lion heads, each spouting cold, clear spring water into a stone trough. The lions echo the symbol of Saint Mark and recall Spili's Venetian heritage, and the fountain remains the social and visual heart of the village. The water is famously cold, at a steady temperature of about 13 degrees, and pours continuously at a generous rate, so visitors regularly fill bottles and drink straight from the spouts beneath the shade of the plane trees.
Beyond the fountain, Spili rewards slow wandering. Its quiet backstreets lead past old houses and small churches, some preserving centuries-old frescoes, while the central square and main street are lined with cafes, tavernas and shops selling local produce, herbs, honey and crafts. The setting amid green hills also makes the village a base for walks into the surrounding countryside, and it is well placed as a stop on routes to the southern beaches and gorges of the region.
Reaching Spili is simple by car, as it sits directly on the main inland road connecting Rethymno with the south coast around Agia Galini and Plakias, about a 30 to 40 minute drive from Rethymno. KTEL buses running between Rethymno and the south coast also call at the village, making it accessible without a car, and many visitors stop here while touring the region.
Spili suits travellers who enjoy authentic mountain villages, relaxed cafe stops and a taste of everyday Cretan life away from the busier resorts. Whether as a short break to drink from the lion fountain or a longer pause to eat in a shaded taverna, it offers a genuine and easygoing slice of inland Crete.
