Matala Beach sits on the south coast of central Crete, tucked into a sheltered cove in the Gulf of Messara roughly 68 km southwest of Heraklion and a short drive from the Phaistos and Gortyn archaeological sites. The beach curves between two headlands, and its most striking feature is the sandstone cliff on the northern side, honeycombed with caves. These caves were carved in the Roman era as burial chambers (and used even earlier, in Neolithic times, as dwellings), with some still showing carved benches and arched ceilings. In antiquity the bay served as the harbour for Minoan Phaistos and later the Roman port of Gortyn. Matala is best known today for its 1960s and early-1970s history, when the caves became home to an international hippie community. Musicians and travellers passing through left their mark on the village's free-spirited reputation, and the era is celebrated each June with the Matala Beach Festival. The caves are now fenced for preservation but can be viewed and photographed from the beach and a walking path, with a small entrance fee to access the protected site up close. The beach itself has soft golden sand shelving into clear, shallow turquoise water, which makes it comfortable for families and casual swimmers. The cove's orientation gives it some shelter, and the dramatic cliff backdrop makes it one of the more photogenic beaches in southern Crete, especially at sunset when the rock face glows. Matala is a fully organised beach. Visitors will find sunbeds and umbrellas for rent, beach bars, tavernas and public toilets and showers near the entrance, plus a compact village of small family-run hotels, apartments and restaurants just behind the sand. There are no large resorts, which helps preserve the laid-back character. It suits travellers who want a mix of swimming, history and atmosphere rather than seclusion, as the beach can get busy in high summer. Practical tips: come early in peak season to claim a spot, wear something on your feet if exploring the rocky areas around the caves, and consider walking the short coastal path south to the quieter Red Beach.
