Kommos Beach runs along the southern shoreline of the Gulf of Messara on Crete's south coast, around 66 km southwest of Heraklion and roughly 2 km north of Matala, near the village of Pitsidia. It is a long, wild stretch of deep golden sand, extending well over 2 km and up to around 40 m wide, backed by natural dunes and low cliffs topped with tamarisk and carob trees that provide patches of welcome shade. The beach takes its name from the adjacent Kommos archaeological site, a major Bronze Age settlement and harbour that served Minoan Phaistos. Excavations have been ongoing here since 1976, uncovering shipyards, large stone storage buildings and remains that point to Kommos's role as an important Minoan port in the second millennium BC. The fenced site sits just behind the central part of the beach. Kommos is also an important ecological site. It is a nesting beach for the loggerhead sea turtle (Caretta caretta) and is monitored each year by Archelon, the Sea Turtle Protection Society of Greece. Between roughly May and September turtles come ashore to lay their eggs, and nests are marked and sometimes fenced off with wire so the eggs can incubate in the warm sand. Visitors are asked to avoid the beach at night during nesting season and to respect the marked nests. Because of its protected status and undeveloped character, Kommos has limited facilities compared with neighbouring resort beaches, and sunbed rentals can be absent or restricted in parts due to turtle nesting. The northern section, with its tree cover, is well known as a naturist beach and is widely regarded as one of the best nudist beaches on Crete. Kommos suits travellers seeking space, natural scenery and a quieter day by the sea, as well as those interested in archaeology and wildlife. Practical tips: bring water, snacks and your own shade since amenities are sparse, watch for waves and wind on this open coast, and keep well clear of any fenced or marked turtle nests.
