Vai Palm Beach sits on the far northeastern tip of Crete, around 23 kilometres from Sitia (about a 45-minute drive) and roughly 8 kilometres north of the small village of Palekastro, facing the open sea towards Karpathos. It is one of the island's most famous beaches, instantly recognisable for the dense palm grove that fringes the sand and gives the whole place an almost tropical, Caribbean-like atmosphere of golden sand, turquoise water and a dramatic mountainous backdrop. The real star here is the Finikodasos, Europe's largest natural palm forest. This protected ecosystem contains roughly 4,500 native Cretan date palms, some said to be very old, spread across a grove covering about 250 acres. The origins of the palms are uncertain and debated, with theories ranging from introduction by Phoenician traders to seeds carried on the wind from North Africa. The forest gained international fame in the 1970s thanks to a British TV advertisement for a coconut chocolate bar that presented Vai as a slice of paradise. The beach itself is around 200 metres long, with fine golden sand and clear turquoise water, and it has been awarded a Blue Flag for water quality. Because the palm forest is strictly protected, walking among the trees is restricted to marked paths, so visitors should respect the fenced and signposted areas rather than wandering freely through the grove. Facilities are adequate for a day trip: the beach is equipped with sunbeds and umbrellas for hire, and there is a small canteen offering snacks and drinks. Reaching Vai almost always means driving, as it lies well beyond Sitia at the end of the eastern road network, and there is a car park serving the beach and forest. Vai suits travellers who want a genuinely iconic, photogenic setting and don't mind sharing it. In July and August it draws large crowds from mid-morning through to late afternoon, so an early arrival is the best way to enjoy the palms and the water before the day-trippers pour in.
