Nea Chora

Nea Chora is Chania's town beach, a long sandy strip just 1km west of the city centre along Akti Papanikoli street, opposite the small Lazaretta islet. It is close enough to walk to: from the old Venetian harbour it takes only around 15 minutes on foot, which makes it the obvious choice for anyone staying in town who wants a quick swim without renting a car or catching a bus. The beach is a generous stretch of golden sand with calm, shallow seas, well suited to easy swimming and relaxed days by the water. The middle section is smooth and sandy, giving plenty of comfortable space for sunbathing and beach activities, while there are some rocks in the water at both ends of the beach to be aware of. Being on the north coast, conditions are generally gentle but can pick up on windier days. The main part of Nea Chora is a fully organised beach. Visitors will find sunbeds, umbrellas, and showers available for a fee, along with lifeguard services in season, which adds reassurance for families. Mini supermarkets and tavernas line the beach, and some even offer delivery service down to the sunbeds, so you needn't move far for a cold drink or a snack. Food is a real highlight here. Nea Chora is well known among locals for its fish tavernas, and the lively seafront promenade is dotted with beachfront cafes and traditional Cretan tavernas, many serving fresh seafood landed at the nearby fishing harbour. It is a genuine working neighbourhood rather than a tourist enclave, which gives it an authentic, local feel even though it is right beside the city. Nea Chora suits travellers who want the convenience of a beach within walking distance of Chania's sights, combined with proper facilities and excellent seafood dining. A nice bonus for summer visitors is the annual Sardine Festival held at the beach, featuring traditional music, dancing, and free grilled fish, a lively celebration of the area's fishing heritage.
