Strand Lygaria

Lygaria Beach lies on Crete's north coast in the Agia Pelagia area, about 21 km northwest of Heraklion (roughly a 25-30 minute drive) and around 1 km east of Agia Pelagia village. It is the second-largest organised beach in the Agia Pelagia district, set in an enclosed bay that is well protected from the northwest winds that frequently affect this stretch of coast. That sheltered position is Lygaria's biggest asset. While other nearby bays can get choppy, Lygaria typically stays calmer, offering a tranquil place to swim. The beach runs for about 420 m and is made up of coarse sand, with clear, deep turquoise water that deepens fairly quickly, giving good conditions for swimming and snorkelling. Lygaria tends to be quieter than its neighbouring bays, particularly midweek, and there is generally plenty of space between the sunbeds. This makes it a relaxed choice for couples and families who want an organised beach without the crowds of a major resort. Facilities are well developed. There is ample parking, public restrooms, showers, changing rooms and lifeguards, along with accessibility provisions for visitors with disabilities. Behind the beach you will find cafes and tavernas serving traditional Greek food, souvenir shops and a store selling beach supplies, drinks and groceries, and a professional dive center offers workshops and excursions. A mix of hotels, apartments and rooms to rent makes it an easy base for a longer stay. Lygaria suits travellers who want calm, clear water, decent amenities and a more peaceful atmosphere than the busier Agia Pelagia bays, with the convenience of being close to Heraklion. Practical tips: it is well signposted off the main road, the deeper water near the shore makes it better for confident swimmers, and arriving by car is easy thanks to the parking, though the beach can fill up at weekends.
