Red Beach, known in Greek as Kokkini Ammos, lies just south of Matala on Crete's south coast, around 68 km southwest of Heraklion. Hidden in a small cove at the base of arid hillsides and pale limestone cliffs, it takes its name from the distinctive reddish, fine sand that contrasts vividly with the clear aquamarine water. Its tucked-away position gives it a secluded, dramatic feel quite different from the more accessible Matala Beach next door.
The main appeal of Red Beach is precisely that seclusion. Reaching it takes effort, which keeps crowds down and rewards visitors with a quieter, more scenic spot. That isolation has also made it one of the most famous naturist beaches in Greece, with a designated naturist area, though visitors are welcome regardless of attire.
Most people arrive on foot. A short but steep trail starts north of the cove and crosses the hill of Kastri above Matala; it takes roughly 30 to 40 minutes one way and involves clambering over rocks at the start and a steep descent at the end. The path is uneven and scattered with loose stones, so sturdy footwear is essential and the walk is not ideal for very young children or those with mobility issues.
Alternatively, small boats run from Matala Beach in the warmer months, with the crossing costing only a few euros per person, which is a good option for anyone who wants to skip the hike or carry more gear.
Facilities at Red Beach are minimal. There is usually a small bar serving drinks, and sunbeds and umbrellas can be rented, but supplies are limited, so it is wise to bring your own water, food and shade and to arrive early in high season to secure a spot. The beach suits adventurous travellers and naturists looking for a striking, off-the-beaten-track swim within easy reach of Matala.
