Richtis Gorge is a lush, protected ravine on the northern side of far-eastern Crete, set between the towns of Agios Nikolaos and Sitia. In a region better known for its dry, sun-baked landscapes, the gorge is a surprising oasis of dense greenery, running water and shade, fed by a stream that keeps it cool and verdant even through the heat of summer. It is one of the most rewarding hikes in the Sitia area and a favourite with walkers looking for nature rather than crowds. The trail begins just outside the traditional village of Exo Mouliana and descends through the gorge to the sea at Richtis beach, a little east of the village of Kalavros. The route runs around four kilometres with an elevation drop of roughly 350 metres, and most walkers allow something like three to four hours to complete it at a comfortable pace, including stops. It is generally rated moderate in the drier months but can become considerably harder and slippery in winter when water levels are high, so timing and footwear matter. The undisputed highlight is the Richtis waterfall, which tumbles more than twenty metres into a pool at its base. Because the stream flows year-round, the falls keep their water even in summer, and the pool is a popular spot for a cooling dip midway through the walk. Along the way the path crosses the stream repeatedly, passes an old stone bridge and threads beneath plane trees and thick vegetation, with birdsong and running water replacing the usual Cretan cicadas. The gorge ends at the pebbly Richtis beach, a quiet cove backed by a small park shaded with tamarisk trees, with stone benches and tables and a fountain of drinkable water. It makes a natural place to rest and swim before turning back, and many hikers treat the beach as the reward at the end of the descent. The combination of waterfall, river crossings and a remote beach gives the route a satisfying variety. Visitors usually drive to the trailhead near Exo Mouliana, around fifteen kilometres from Sitia or roughly fifty from Agios Nikolaos, parking near the Lachanas bridge where parking is limited. The walk down and back, or a one-way version with a vehicle arranged at the beach end, suits reasonably fit hikers, nature lovers and anyone wanting to combine a scenic trek with a swim.
