Imbros Gorge

Gorge Hiking Nature

Imbros Gorge is one of the most popular hikes in southern Crete, a dramatic canyon slicing down through the Sfakia region toward the Libyan Sea. Less demanding than the famous Samaria Gorge to its west, it offers much of the same wild limestone scenery in a shorter and gentler package, which makes it a favourite for families and casual walkers as well as serious hikers. It forms part of the long-distance E4 European hiking path that traverses Crete. The trail begins at the mountain village of Imbros, perched at around 750 to 780 metres above sea level, and descends roughly 8 kilometres to the village of Komitades near the south coast. Because the route runs almost entirely downhill, the walk is comparatively easy and usually takes between two and three hours at a relaxed pace. Along the way the path follows the dry riverbed beneath sheer cliffs, passing caves, old stone landmarks and the little chapel that marks the route. The scenic highlight is the narrowest point, sometimes called the Stenada, where the canyon walls press in to little more than 1.6 metres apart while rising as much as 300 metres above the path. Cypress and pine cling to the rock, and in spring wildflowers soften the stark grey stone. The gorge also carries echoes of history: it served as an escape route for Allied soldiers retreating to the coast during the Battle of Crete in the Second World War. Most walkers tackle the gorge from top to bottom, starting at Imbros and finishing at Komitades, where tavernas wait at the trail's end. A small entrance fee is charged in season. Because the start and finish points are different villages, planning transport is part of the trip. Imbros lies roughly 55 kilometres south of Chania on the road over the Askyfou plateau toward Chora Sfakion, and many visitors arrive by organised excursion, rental car with a taxi shuttle back to the start, or local bus. Imbros suits a wide range of visitors, from reasonably active families to older travellers who want a taste of a Cretan gorge without the long, strenuous day that Samaria demands. Good footwear, water and sun protection are still recommended, as the riverbed is rocky and shade is limited in places. Many combine the hike with a swim and a meal on the nearby south coast at Chora Sfakion or the secluded village of Loutro.
