Georgioupolis and Lake Kournas: Rivers, Eucalyptus and Crete's Only Lake
Rivers are rare on Crete, and Georgioupolis has three of them. The Almyros and its siblings rise from springs in the White Mountains and reach the sea right in the middle of the village, which gives this stretch of coast something no other Cretan resort can offer: cool green water sliding under eucalyptus trees, ducks paddling past taverna tables, and a working river harbour 50 metres from a sandy beach. Add the island's only freshwater lake in the hills behind, and you have one of the most distinctive corners of the north coast.
The village and the chapel
Georgioupolis arranges itself around a vast central square shaded by eucalyptus, planted when the town was laid out in the 1890s and named for Prince George, then High Commissioner of Crete. The square does what Greek squares should: coffee in the morning, families on the evening volta, tavernas around the edges. From the harbour mouth, a rough stone causeway runs out to sea, ending at the tiny white chapel of Agios Nikolaos, the most photographed building in the region. Walk it in calm weather only and wear shoes with grip; waves break over the rocks when the wind is up, and people get caught out every summer.
Beaches and the river
The main beach runs east from the river mouth for several uninterrupted kilometres towards Kavros, sandy and broad, with sunbeds thinning as you walk. Swimmers should respect the flags: currents near the river mouths and sudden depth changes mean this coast demands more attention than the sheltered coves further east. Where the Almyros meets the sea, the water turns abruptly cold, a genuinely odd sensation on an August afternoon. Small boats run river trips up the Almyros through the greenery, turtles and herons included.
Lake Kournas
Four kilometres inland, ringed by hills with the White Mountains stacked behind, Lake Kournas changes colour through the day, from morning grey-green to an implausible afternoon turquoise. Pedal boats putter across it in season, terrapins sun themselves along the banks, and a sandy fringe on the near shore makes for warm, calm swimming that children adore. Tavernas line the lakeside road, and the village of Kournas up the hill keeps a quieter, older Crete in reserve. Go late afternoon when the coaches have gone and the light comes low across the water.
Position and practicalities
Sitting almost exactly between Chania and Rethymno, Georgioupolis is a strong base for the whole west. The transfer from Chania Airport takes about 40 minutes; coming from Rethymno it is barely 20. Rethymno's Venetian old town makes the obvious first day trip, and our Rethymno guide covers the fortress, the harbour and where to eat. Westward, Chania, the Apokoronas villages and eventually the Samaria Gorge all sit within comfortable reach.
The character summary is simple: green where the rest of the coast is dry, calm where it is loud, and better suited to long lunches and lake afternoons than to nightlife. Couples and families settle in here fast. Bring a book for the square and insect repellent for the river evenings, and let the eucalyptus do the rest.
