Marathi Beach sits on the southern side of the Akrotiri peninsula, overlooking the sheltered waters of Souda Bay, roughly a 30-minute drive from Chania town. It is a long-standing local favourite, the kind of place where Chania residents go for an evening swim followed by dinner, rather than a heavily marketed tourist resort. The setting is gentle and unhurried, with views across the bay and a relaxed, family-oriented atmosphere. The beach is really two small sandy coves separated by a low rocky point. Both are fringed with soft golden sand and shaded in places by a line of old tamarisk trees, which provide welcome natural cover during the hottest hours of the day. The water is shallow, warm, and remarkably calm, since the bay is well protected from the prevailing winds; even on days when the open north coast is choppy, Marathi usually stays glassy and swimmable, which makes it especially good for children. Facilities are modest but sufficient. There are two well-regarded tavernas at the beach serving fresh seafood and traditional Cretan cooking, and it is the waterfront fish taverna that draws many locals in the evenings. Sunbeds and umbrellas are available, and there is a small car park right by the sand where free parking is usually easy to find, even in summer. Marathi suits families, couples, and anyone after a calm, low-key day by the sea rather than a party scene or a long sweep of organised beach. Because the coves are small, the two bays can feel cosy and fill up at weekends, so the quietest experience is usually to be had midweek, roughly Monday to Thursday. The main swimming season runs from around June to October, when the sheltered water is reliably warm. Practical tips are simple: arrive earlier on busy summer weekends to secure a parking space and a shady spot under the tamarisks, and consider timing a visit around an early dinner so you can combine a swim in the calm shallows with a meal at one of the seafront tavernas, which is exactly how the locals have enjoyed Marathi for generations.
