Frangokastello lies on Crete's south coast in the Sfakia region, about 13km east of Hora Sfakion and some 80km southeast of Chania, set in a small coastal plain at the foot of the White Mountains. Its defining landmark is the imposing Venetian fortress that gives the beach its name, built between 1371 and 1374 to impose order on the rebellious Sfakians, deter pirates, and protect Venetian nobles and their property. The honey-coloured stone of the castle standing against the white sand and brilliant blue sea creates one of the most photogenic scenes in the Mediterranean. The main beach is long, wide, and sandy, stretching nearly half a kilometre, with fine golden sand backed in places by sizeable sand dunes. Its outstanding characteristic is the water: exceptionally shallow and warm, with the gently sloping seabed extending the shallows well over 100 metres out from the shore. This makes Frangokastello one of the safest beaches in Crete for toddlers and nervous swimmers, as children can paddle a long way out while still standing. The beach is organised, with umbrellas, sunbeds, and showers available, and a scattering of tavernas and rooms in the small settlement behind it. It can get quite crowded at the height of the season. The one recurring drawback is the wind: northerly gusts can sweep down off the mountains and across the open plain, sometimes whipping up the fine sand uncomfortably, so checking the forecast is worthwhile. Just east of the castle, about 300 metres along the coast, is a second beach known as Orthi Ammos, meaning standing sand, named for the tall dunes you scramble down to reach the water. Here too the sea is crystal-clear and the bottom slopes very gently, offering another shallow, scenic spot away from the main organised stretch. Frangokastello also carries a famous piece of local lore: the Drosoulites, a mirage-like apparition of marching figures that residents claim to have witnessed on calm early mornings in the second half of May, around the anniversary of an 1828 battle at the fort. Whether you come for the history, the legend, the photogenic castle, or simply the safe shallow water, Frangokastello rewards the longer drive out to Crete's quieter southern shore.
