Agia Galini Beach belongs to one of the most popular seaside resorts of southern Rethymno, on the south coast of Crete. The town sits about 61 km south of Rethymno city and around 68 km southwest of Heraklion, built picturesquely on the slopes of a steep hillside near the mouth of the River Platys (also called the Amarianos), which flows year-round down from the village of Thronos. The beaches lie just east of the village and are easily reached on foot along a path from the harbour, where a great rock rises from the sea, linked in legend to Daedalus and Icarus taking flight. The main beach is a mix of sand and pebbles and is spacious enough that, despite Agia Galini's popularity, it does not usually feel uncomfortably crowded. The river running into the sea adds a distinctive green, natural element to the setting. A charming feature is the small green iron bridge that crosses the Platys river. Cross it and you reach the east beach, which is also sand and pebble at the start but becomes pebblier and less organised further along, with a camping site located next to it. This gives visitors a choice between the lively, well-equipped main beach and a quieter, more secluded stretch a short walk away. Facilities on the main beach near the harbour are good. There are umbrellas, sunbeds available to hire (around 8 euros per day), cafeterias and tavernas, and the well-organised section provides all the amenities most visitors need. Because Agia Galini is a full resort town, you also have ready access to a wide range of accommodation, restaurants, entertainment, shops, banks, a post office and medical services, all within easy reach of the sand. Agia Galini suits visitors who want a beach holiday combined with the buzz and convenience of a lively village. Families and couples can enjoy the organised main beach and harbourside dining, while those wanting more peace can cross the bridge to the eastern stretch. The town also makes a handy base for boat trips along the south coast and for exploring nearby beaches, with the steep, photogenic layout of the village itself adding to its appeal.
