The Botanical Park & Gardens of Crete is a lush living museum of plants set on the lower slopes of the White Mountains, about 18 kilometres south of Chania between the villages of Fournes and Skordalou. Spread across nearly 20 hectares of hillside, it gathers fruit trees, herbs, medicinal and ornamental plants from across the world alongside species native to Crete, all arranged so that visitors can wander through them at leisure on a network of looping paths. The park has a poignant origin story. It grew out of the devastating wildfires of 2003 that scorched the family land on which it stands, and a charred centenarian olive tree is preserved within the grounds as a memorial to that destruction and a symbol of regeneration. From those ashes the owners created a garden that now showcases just how much can flourish in the mild Cretan climate, blending the island's agricultural heritage with subtropical and exotic plantings. Walking the trails, visitors descend through terraces of citrus, cherry, avocado, banana and other fruit trees, past vineyards, aromatic herbs and beds of flowers, with the slopes of the White Mountains rising in the background. The varied microclimates on the hillside allow plants from tropical, Mediterranean and temperate zones to grow within a short walk of one another. Birds, butterflies and small animals are drawn to the greenery, and shaded benches and viewpoints invite you to pause along the way. A taverna at the park serves dishes made with produce grown on site. The park is generally open daily from around 9 a.m. until shortly before sunset from March to mid-November, with reduced weekend and holiday opening in winter; an admission fee applies. The walk through the gardens is downhill and on natural paths, so comfortable shoes are sensible, and visitors should allow a couple of hours to see it properly. Getting there is straightforward: it lies just off the main road inland from Chania, reachable by car in around half an hour, and a daily public bus also runs from Chania's central bus station in the morning. The Botanical Park is especially well suited to families, nature enthusiasts and anyone looking for a relaxed, green half-day away from the beaches and busy old town. Children enjoy spotting the fruit and animals, while keen gardeners and photographers appreciate the sheer variety of species on display in such a scenic mountain setting.
