Kedrodasos is a secluded, wild beach on the southwestern coast of Crete, lying just about one kilometre east of its far more famous neighbour, Elafonisi, and roughly 76 kilometres southwest of Chania. Where Elafonisi draws crowds, Kedrodasos remains one of the few stretches of Cretan coast that has stayed almost entirely natural and undeveloped, which is exactly why nature lovers and peace seekers seek it out. The beach takes its name from the dense forest behind it: 'Kedrodasos' means 'cedar forest' in Greek, though the trees are in fact a rare mix of junipers, including maritime juniper and Phoenicean juniper, alongside carob trees. These slow-growing trees come right down toward the sand, creating pockets of natural shade and a distinctive, almost primeval atmosphere unlike any organised resort beach. The shoreline mixes pale sand with large boulders and clear, shallow water, conditions that make it excellent both for gentle swimming and for snorkeling around the rocks. The absence of buildings, music and crowds gives the place a serene, immersive feel, and it is popular with those looking to escape the busier beaches nearby. Facilities are essentially non-existent. There are no beach bars, sunbeds, shops or toilets on site, so visitors must bring their own food, water and sun protection. Wild camping is officially not permitted, and signs ask visitors to treat the fragile juniper forest with great care, since the trees grow only about a metre every ten years and must never be cut for firewood. Reaching Kedrodasos usually means driving: a car is the most convenient option, taking roughly 1.5 to 2 hours from Chania, with the final stretch on a dirt road where a vehicle with decent ground clearance helps. From the parking area it is a short walk in to the sand. The beach suits independent travellers, snorkelers and anyone craving quiet and unspoilt nature, but it is not the place for those who want amenities and service close at hand.
