Cretaquarium, part of the Thalassocosmos research and exhibition complex, is one of the largest and most modern aquariums in Europe and a leading family attraction on the north coast of Crete. It stands at Gournes, on the site of a former American military base about 14 km east of Heraklion and a short drive west of the resorts of Hersonissos and Malia. Opened in December 2005, it was conceived not only as a visitor attraction but as part of the Hellenic Centre for Marine Research, giving it a genuine scientific and conservation purpose. The aquarium focuses above all on the Mediterranean Sea, showcasing the marine life of the waters around Crete and the wider region. It houses dozens of tanks ranging in size from small displays to enormous panoramic basins, holding well over a million litres of seawater in total. These exhibits are home to roughly 2,500 organisms across many hundreds of species, presented in carefully designed habitats that recreate different underwater environments. Walking the route, visitors encounter everything from tiny crabs and colourful anemones to shoals of fish, eels, lobsters, jellyfish, octopuses and sea turtles, building up to the big tanks where sharks and large fish glide past behind huge viewing windows just inches away. Information panels and an audio guide explain the species and the ecosystems they belong to, making the visit as educational as it is entertaining, with a strong emphasis on the importance of protecting the marine world. The experience is designed with families in mind. Scheduled feeding sessions let visitors watch the animals being fed while staff explain their diets and behaviour, and there are interactive elements where children can learn about and sometimes gently encounter shoreline creatures under supervision. The well-laid-out indoor route is comfortable in any weather, making it a reliable choice on a windy or rainy day, and a typical visit takes one to two hours. Cretaquarium is open daily year-round, with longer hours in the summer season and shorter ones in winter, and tickets are available at the entrance with discounts for children and family rates. It is easily reached by car with ample parking, by the regular buses running along the north-coast road between Heraklion and the eastern resorts, or by organised excursions. It is ideal for families with children, school groups and anyone curious about Mediterranean sea life, and works well as a half-day outing alongside the nearby beaches.
